SYMBOLS

Symbols are vehicles of meaning. They incorporate meaning and they transport messages. People send and receive messages through symbols and symbolic practices. Thus, communication is based on the understanding of symbols.

The Olympic Games, as symbolic practice, inform us about social practices and about people's way of thinking. In every era, people need to learn to survive in the social conditions; they also need to communicate with their contemporaries. The processes of learning and communicating are passed through the understanding of the symbols: symbols from the classical past, such as the ancient stadium and its classical decoration, the branch of wild olive-tree etc.; symbols of 19th century, such as the King, music, speeches; modern symbols of the International Olympic Committee. We will approach the organisation of the Olympic Games through the above prism.
